Understanding insurance
All vehicles must have motor insurance coverage to be used in Singapore. It is a requirement for your vehicle to be insured for the entire road tax renewal period before its road tax can be renewed.
The insurance must at least cover third-party liability for deaths and bodily injury. This is important so that traffic accident victims can be covered by insurance.
Update your insurance company and seek advice on the insurance coverage if you:
- Intend to change the scheme or purpose of your vehicle. For example, if you changed your personal use car to a private hire car.
- Modify your vehicle. For example, if you add a canopy to your lorry.
Insurance as a prerequisite to road tax renewal
Motor insurance is a prerequisite before you can renew your road tax. Your insurance must cover the entire road tax renewal period before you can renew.
If you are renewing your vehicle road tax via digital services, you need to buy your motor insurance at least 3 working days in advance.
If you are renewing your vehicle road tax at road tax collection centres, bring along either your original certificate of insurance, electronic certificate of insurance or cover note.
