Understanding Goods Vehicle and Engineering Plant Registration

Goods vehicles and engineering plants must be registered in Singapore before they can be used or driven on public roads.

There are 4 types of goods vehicles:

  • Light Goods Vehicles
  • Heavy Goods Vehicles
  • Very Heavy Goods Vehicles
  • Goods-cum-Passengers Vehicles

Once registered, the lifespan for goods vehicles is 20 years. There is no lifespan restriction for engineering plants.

Registering a Goods Vehicle or Engineering Plant

There are 2 ways to register your goods vehicle or engineering plant:

1. Through a Motor Dealer

From 28 August 2023, all Vehicle Registration applications created by a motor dealer (i.e. Electronic Service Agent) require you to login to onemotoring.lta.gov.sg > Login Dashboard using your Singpass 2FA to provide consent and authorisation to proceed with registration.

2. Self-registration at LTA Customer Service Centre

If you are registering the goods vehicle or engineering plant personally, you will need to follow these steps:

Step 1: Apply for a Vehicle Approval Code (VAC) through VITAS

Step 2: Submit the prerequisite documents

Step 3: Pay registration fees and charges

Step 4: Affix your registration number plates

Step 5: Display your side markings (for Light Goods Vehicle)

Goods vehicle classification

Goods vehicles, except for Goods-cum-Passengers Vehicles (GPVs), are classified according to their maximum laden weight (MLW):

  • Light Goods Vehicle (LGV)                       — MLW ≤ 3,500kg
  • Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV)                  — 3,500kg < MLW ≤ 16,000kg
  • Very Heavy Goods Vehicle (VHGV)   — MLW > 16,000kg

GPVs are vehicles which transport both goods and passengers.  They are manufactured to carry 7 passengers or more, excluding driver, and can have MLW of up to 5,000kg.  Depending on their MLW, they can be LGVs or HGVs.

Goods vehicle lifespan

Once registered, goods vehicles have a lifespan of 20 years, at the end of which they must be deregistered. There is no lifespan restriction for engineering plants.
