Cars and Motorcycles Registered in Malaysia

Your Malaysia-registered vehicles must have a valid Autopass card, insurance, road tax, LTA's VEP approval email and proper licence plates displayed at the front and back before entering Singapore.

You are required to present the vehicle's certificate of insurance, road tax and vehicle registration certificate, together with the vehicle's Autopass card and LTA's VEP approval email, upon request by authorised officers in Singapore.

You can keep or use Malaysia-registered cars or motorcycles in Singapore if you meet these requirements below.

Important

Foreign-registered vehicles need to have valid VEPs for the duration of vehicle's stay in Singapore, regardless of whether they are used on Singapore roads. VEPs for Social Visit Pass holders have a validity period of up to 14 days from the date of the vehicle's entry into Singapore.

Bringing a Malaysia-registered car or motorcycle into and out of Singapore

Before entering Singapore

You must meet these requirements:

• Have a valid Autopass card
• Have a valid road tax for the vehicle
• Have a valid certificate of insurance to use the vehicle on Singapore roads. You are to ensure that the vehicle has in force a policy of insurance meeting the requirements of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960 for the entire period that the vehicle remains in Singapore.
• Have a valid LTA's VEP approval email
• Have proper licence plates displayed at the front and back of the vehicle
• Settle all outstanding fines for your vehicle. (You can check online at AXS website for outstanding offences)
• Have valid approvals/permits from the relevant authorities to drive, keep or use the vehicle in Singapore

You are not allowed to keep or use a foreign-registered vehicle in Singapore if you are a:

• Singapore citizen
• Singapore Permanent Resident (PR)
• Resident of Singapore
• Long-Term Visit Pass or Dependant's Pass holder
• Student's Pass holder
• Training Employment Pass or Work Holiday Pass holder
• Work Pass holder who is also a resident of Singapore

Any person who is not a resident of Singapore, but holds a Work Pass issued by the Ministry of Manpower, may keep or use a foreign-registered vehicle in Singapore if ALL these conditions are met:

• The person is the registered owner of the vehicle
• The person resides outside Singapore
• The person has a valid certificate of insurance and road tax to use the vehicle on Singapore roads
• The vehicle is kept or used outside Singapore for a total period of 6 hours or more every day
• The vehicle has an Autopass card to validate its entry / exit at Woodlands or Tuas Checkpoint and to pay for the required fees and charges

The requirements for Malaysia-registered vehicles also apply to Thailand-registered cars and motorcycles to be kept or used in Singapore. In addition, Thailand-registered vehicles must have Singapore insurance coverage from a Singapore-based insurance company for the duration of your vehicle's stay in Singapore.

Apply for Autopass Card And Update Vehicle's Road Tax and Insurance Validity 

Register for an Autopass account via https://onemotoring.lta.gov.sg/vepds/vep at least 2 weeks ahead of your travel to Singapore. You can use your Autopass account to apply for Autopass card, update your vehicle's road tax and insurance validity for your vehicle's Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP), check your application status and VEP validity, and receive reminder notifications for expiring VEPs.

Once your VEP application is approved, you may pay for your Autopass card online with VISA or Mastercard Credit/Debit Card, Apple Pay or Google Pay and collect your Autopass card at the specific card collection centre located in Malaysia which you have selected (refer to the steps in LTA's VEP approval email). You may also add another car or motorcycle that you are authorised by the owner to drive into Singapore. Each Autopass card is encoded with specified vehicle’s particulars and is strictly non-transferable.

Drivers with existing VEPs, valid LTA's approval email and Autopass card for their foreign-registered car or motorcycle may continue to drive into Singapore. They may sign up for an Autopass account when renewing or applying for VEP, when they next renew their road tax and insurance in Malaysia.

Your vehicle must have valid Autopass card, insurance, road tax, LTA's VEP approval email and proper licence plates displayed at the front and back before it can enter Singapore. You are required to present the vehicle's certificate of insurance, road tax and vehicle registration certificate, together with the vehicle's Autopass card and LTA's VEP approval email, upon request by authorised officers in Singapore.

Foreign-registered vehicles detected at Woodlands or Tuas Checkpoint without valid LTA's VEP approval email, Autopass card, insurance and road tax or are in violation of Singapore regulations will be turned back from Singapore. If the vehicle is found within Singapore, it would be subject to enforcement action including vehicle seizure.

Travellers without valid LTA’s approval email and vehicle entry permit for their foreign-registered vehicles are advised to use alternative modes of travel, such as authorised cross-border buses, taxis and trains, if they need to travel to Singapore urgently. Within Singapore, there are convenient public transport options such as buses and MRT, supplemented with taxis and private hire car services.

When entering Singapore

You are required to present the vehicle's certificate of insurance, road tax and vehicle registration certificate, together with the vehicle's Autopass card and LTA's VEP approval email, upon request by authorised officers in Singapore.

When bringing your vehicle into Singapore via Tuas or Woodlands Checkpoint, insert your Autopass card into the card reader at the immigration booth to validate your vehicle's entry, even when the barrier at the immigration booth is lifted. Your entry and exit fees and charges will be deducted from your Autopass card when your vehicle exits Singapore. 

Extension of Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) in Singapore for Social Visit Pass holders

VEPs for Social Visit Pass holders have a validity period of up to 14 days from the date of the vehicle's entry into Singapore. To keep a foreign-registered vehicle in Singapore beyond 14 days, please submit a request via LTA's online feedback form, at least 5 days before the VEP expires. Select the "Vehicle Matters" category and the "Autopass, Vehicle Entry Permits and Tolls" sub-category. Key in "VEP Extension - [Vehicle Number]" in the subject field for your request to be processed more promptly.

Enforcement action, including the seizure of vehicles, will be taken against vehicles with expired VEPs in Singapore.

When driving in Singapore

Electronic Road Pricing (ERP)

When driving in Singapore, you may encounter ERP gantries that are used to control traffic congestion. You will incur an ERP charge when you drive through the gantries during operational hours.

When exiting Singapore

You can bring your vehicle out of Singapore via Tuas or Woodlands Checkpoint. Before exiting, ensure that you have sufficient value in your Autopass card to pay all the fees and charges incurred during your vehicle's stay in Singapore.

Your Autopass card can be topped up to a maximum of $500. If you need to make payment of more than $500, you will need to make payment at LTA’s VEP/Toll Offices at Tuas or Woodlands Checkpoint, preferably by NETS, credit card or debit card. Bring your Autopass card so that we can update the trip records. 

At the immigration booth, insert your Autopass card into the card reader to register your vehicle's exit and pay the applicable fees for your vehicle, even when the barrier at the immigration booth is lifted.

From 1 January 2027, the revised VEP fees will apply on weekdays (excluding Singapore public holidays). A flat-rate ERP fee will also apply on ERP operational days for foreign-registered cars and motorcycles without OBUs.
